From Foothills to the Himalayas, and back
Every year at the beginning of summer hundreds of van Gujjars (forest shepherds) move from Mohand in the Shiwaliks near Dehradun to the Himalayan meadows. Whole families and their buffaloes, mules, and dogs walk more than a hundred kilometers to get to their annual summer grazing grounds. After spending summer months there, they walk back to Mohand in September or October. This annual journey takes the Gujjar through our village Masrana. It is lovely to hear hundreds of buffalo bells and watch the old and young on their slow march towards the mountains, or winter home in the Shiwaliks.
This family passed us in Masrana at the beginning of winter this year.
